Minor in Translation: Training a New Generation of Language Professionals in Saskatchewan

Regina, June 25 – At a time when intercultural exchanges have never been more intense, the University of Regina offers a program tailored to market needs: the Minor in Translation (18 credits).

Offered by La Cité universitaire francophone (La Cité), this program is designed for University of Regina students looking to develop concrete skills in translation, a rapidly growing field, particularly in Saskatchewan, where the vitality of the Francophone community opens many opportunities.

"A common misconception is that mastering two languages is enough to become a professional translator," explains Dr. Olusegun Afolabi. "Translation is a demanding discipline that requires rigorous training. It’s not just about transposing words but about conveying meaning, style, and intent while taking cultural nuances into consideration."

This is precisely the expertise the Minor in Translation program aims to impart. Open to Francophone and Francophile students from all faculties, the program provides practical and theoretical skills while introducing modern tools used by professionals.

The program combines required and elective courses for a total of 18 credits. Students learn the fundamental principles of translation as well as specialized aspects like terminology and the use of CAT tools (computer-assisted translation), now essential in the profession.

Key courses include:

  • FRN 250AH (Introduction to Translation): A first look at core techniques.
  • FRN 450AG (CAT Tools for Translators): Training in industry-standard software like SDL Trados and MemoQ.

These skills are highly sought after in both the public and private sectors, particularly in the medical, legal, and media fields.

Beyond coursework, students receive personalized support, including tutoring, career advising, and scholarships ($500 for those taking at least 3 French courses per semester). Partnerships with Canadian and international institutions as well as professional bodies also provide access to internships, experiential learning and mentorship opportunities.
