Teaching philosophy or approach

My approach to teaching relies on the interplay of distance and proximity. I understand University education as serving as mediation between students’ personal experiences and the reality they study. Consequently, I design my courses as attempts first to tie the different topics we survey to their experiences, so as to help them relate to the subject matter, and second to help students distance themselves from their own experiences and perspectives, and so to help them relate to other perspectives and understand them. When students use their experiences to understand course materials and when they use the course materials to distance themselves from those same experiences and the habitual situation in which they live so as to widen their perspective and learn to include the perspectives of others, tension is created. This destabilizing tension is central to my approach and allows me to teach students more than the content and skills on which I am evaluating them.
