Round-table : How are Negotiations Shaping Up for the Paris Conference on Climate Change? (CRFM/JSGS)

Nov 5, 2015

12:00

From 12:00 to 1:30 p.m.

University of Regina, Institut Language Building, LI 219 (La Rotonde)

The Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy (JSGS) and the Centre canadien de recherche sur les francophonies en milieu minoritaire (CRFM) of La Cité universitaire francophone are pleased to invite you to the first event in the Off the Beaten Track/Hors-Champs Conference Series

Between Science and Politics: How are Negotiations Shaping Up for the Paris Conference on Climate Change?

The Off the Beaten Track/Hors-Champs conference series invites academics and stakeholders to dialogue with the general public in order to offer various perspectives on a significant contemporary issue: a synthesis of academic discussion, testimony from those working in the field, and critical perspectives. Off the Beaten Track/Hors-Champs is a joint initiative of the Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy (JSGS) and the Centre canadien de recherche sur les francophonies en milieu minoritaire (the Canadian research centre on Francophone minority communities/CRFM) of La Cité universitaire francophone. An interpretation service will be provided to allow for dialogue in Canada’s two official languages.

For the inaugural conference in this series, we will be examining the context of the 21st Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21), to be held in Paris from November 30 to December 11, 2015. We are particularly interested in the issues at stake in the negotiations at COP21, which for many experts represents a turning point for our planet. What are the fundamental challenges of this international conference? Aside from the states, who are the principal players involved in the negotiations? How are Canada and its various provinces positioning themselves in the negotiations? How is scientific expertise being exploited? Made up of many countries around the world, is the Francophonie bringing a distinctive voice to the negotiations?

Moderated by Bruno Dupeyron, associate professor at JSGS and project supervisor at the CRFM of La Cité, the roundtable will be made up of three participants: Jean-Christophe Fleury, Consul General of France in Vancouver, Steven Guilbeault, spokesperson for the environmentalist organization Équiterre, Jean Lemire, biologist and filmmaker, and David Sauchyn, Ph.D., a scientific expert on adaptation to climate change from the University of Regina.

Admission is free, subject to seat availability.

Refreshments will be served. Please reserve your place by following this link: https://jsgs.ohmedia.ca/form/704
