Let’s all celebrate 50 years of French at the University of Regina

Feb 6, 2018

In September 1968, Regina’s first bilingual studies centre opened in the heart of the university campus. Fifty years later, La Cité universitaire francophone and the Bac en éducation française program are the Francophonie’s proud representatives at the University of Regina. The two entities continue to work for the advancement of French-language university education on campus.

“French has been resounding at the University of Regina for fifty years: this is a remarkable fact that we owe it to ourselves to celebrate with the whole university and Fransaskois community. It is because of support from both that French has been firmly rooted and has grown and given rise to seven certificate, bachelor’s and master’s level programs,” says  Emmanuel Aito, director of La Cité universitaire francophone.

A program of celebrations has been organized by the teams of La Cité and the Bac to mark the anniversary throughout 2018. The festivities were officially launched on January 30 during an open house aimed at university staff members and non-Francophone students.

The next social gathering at La Cité, with the theme “Rendez-vous for two,” will take place on Thursday, February 15, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The concept is simple: “My French, your culture: the art of seduction.” The goal of the evening is to share our love of French with people of other cultures and languages so that they can be exposed to the Francophone experience in a relaxed and informal setting. The evening will also feature the opening of a photography exhibition by Estelle Bonetto, entitled “The Hand That Feeds.”

March’s Francophonie weeks will be marked by the launch of a book co-written by Michael Poplyanski and Abdoulaye Yoh. Contre toute attente (Against All Expectations) relates the history of the creation and development of the French fact on the University of Regina campus. An exhibition of selected photographs from the book will be held in La Rotonde from March 15 to April 15.

The highlight event of the term will take place on Saturday, April 14 with a gala evening that will bring together key players in French development on campus, along with alumni.

“The gala will be an opportunity to renew ties with our alumni so that they continue to inspire future generations,” says Laurie Carlson Berg, director of the Bac program. “It will also be an occasion to once again thank the bold individuals who have contributed to the establishment of quality French-language postsecondary programs in Saskatchewan over the past 50 years. 2018 also marks the 35th anniversary of the Bac and its collaboration with Laval University, a partnership unique in Canada, so let’s all celebrate the vibrancy of French at the University of Regina!”

More 50th anniversary events and activities, particularly those offered by La Cité’s research centre (CRFM), will be announced on La Cité’s website. La Cité and the Bac warmly invite you to join us in these celebrations!
