Master of French Education (MEd)

The program is offered jointly by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research, the Faculty of Education and La Cité universitaire francophone.

The Maîtrise en éducation française (MEd) is a program that is pertinent to teaching in French in a minority setting.

Within the MEd, there will be two intensive courses offered online during the summer. Students will then take at least one on-campus or online course throughout the fall and winter semester, with the option of taking one course in the spring semester. Once the course requirements have been completed, students may begin their project or thesis.

All teaching and submission of documents will be in French.

Students will benefit from close relationships with their colleagues and professors, as well as personalized guidance. Linguistic and financial support is also available.

Courses in French are available through the following institutions, thanks to the Consortium des établissements universitaires de l’Ouest canadien (www.medouest.ca):

  • University of Regina
  • Université de St-Boniface
  • Campus St-Jean (University of Alberta)
  • Office of francophone and francophile affairs (Simon Fraser University)

The Consortium offers a unique opportunity to learn and share with students from other institutions.

Admission Requirements

All applicants must meet the general admission requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research. In addition, the Faculty of Education requires the following:

  • the applicant must have a four-year degree applicable to the program (normally a B.Ed. or equivalent)
  • a minimum average of 70%
  • at least two years of teaching or other relevant professional experience is preferred but not required

The next cohort will start in July 2024.

  • Summer: Summer intensive courses in July (2 courses worth 3 credits each summer)
  • Fall and Winter Semesters: minimum of one online course per semester with the option to take a spring course online (May-June) as well

Once you have completed your course requirements, you will start your project (6 credits) or thesis (15 credits).

The program may follow a thesis, project, or course route:

  1. 5 courses (3 credits each) thesis
  2. 8 courses (3 credits each) project
  3. 10 courses (3 credits each)

Total: 30 credits

Tuition

Tuition is subject to change each semester. Please check the website for a tuition breakdown. As of February 9, 2015 : 3 credits = $837,65

Application

You must create a username and PIN the first time you access the online application form. If you do not complete the form, you can click Finish Later to return to it.

Please ensure you have prepared the following before applying:

  1. Your contact information including a valid e-mail address
  2. Contact information for a proxy if you would like this person to represent you
  3. List of all institutions attended, including start/end dates (even if you did not complete your studies)
  4. Proof of English language proficiency (if applicable)
  5. Names and email addresses for your references
  6. Personal statement
  7. C.V.
  8. Credit card (MasterCard, VISA or American Express) for a non-refundable $100 application fee

You will be able to view the status of your application online by logging in with your username and PIN.

N.B. Your session will expire after 30 minutes of inactivity

Transcripts

Once you have finished your online application, you may submit your unofficial documents in PDF format before the application deadline to GradDocs@uregina.ca

References

You are required to have two referees submit reference forms on your behalf. The referees are to be persons (academics, employers) who can critically assess your ability to do research and advanced courses. They cannot be a closely associated person or another current graduate student.

These may be sent to GradDocs@uregina.ca by the referees only and will be considered unofficial. They must be sent as an attachment on letterhead of their institution or company and must include their signature. 

The applicant’s name is to appear in the Subject Line of the e-mail. 

If the referees will be sending the reference forms by mail, the letter must arrive in our office in a sealed envelope with the referee’s signature across the seal.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

  • Graduate Studies Scholarship offered by La Cité universitaire francophone ($5000) over two years.
  • Travel reimbursement up to $500 for travel during the summer intensives.

Accommodation

PaskwāwTower (North Residence) at the University of Regina is open to the public during the summer. Prices vary from $30-60 per night. Check the website for more information.
