If you don’t know Devon Peters, you might recognize his beard.
It’s hard not to notice this bearded man (whose beard was an integral part of his campaign branding!), former president of University of Regina Students’ Union (URSU) president, an organization serving approximately 15,000 students.
As well as heading up URSU for two years, Devon remained true to his roots as the group’s Francophone Director. During his term, he spoke on behalf of all French-speaking students throughout strategic planning sessions and budget decisions, a responsibility he did not take lightly.
I wanted to make a positive change in the world.
Thanks to his interest and experience in politics, Devon landed a dream summer job as a bilingual Information Officer at the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. His role included welcoming guests and provided guided tours of the Legislative Building in both official languages as well as participating in government ceremonies and immersing himself in special projects.
While speaking French may have helped him professionally, Devon agrees that it is more than a means to an end.
It is a chance to understand and fall in love with another culture.
While in university, Devon also co-founded the French Students’ Society, whose mandate included hosting events and planning activities in French such as bowling nights, movies screenings, poutine tastings, and, of course, wine and cheese soirées!
Devon’s most cherished memories during this time also includes the Association jeunesse fransaskoise (AJF) activities, such as an annual ski trip or weekend in Winnipeg, MB for the Festival du voyageur, that serve to reinforce a sense of belonging while enriching the student experience.
I enjoyed the familial feeling among the people in my program.
His decision to pursue French education in Le Bac and the French and Francophone Intercultural Studies (BA) was motivated by his desire to have a positive impact in the lives of students, especially as a former French Immersion student at Marion Graham Collegiate in Saskatoon.
With his long list of accomplishments, he is sure to inspire the next generation.
