Alexandra (Alex) Mortensen is wholly invested in la Francophonie. Not only is she passionate about French language, which she began learning in grade 7 in Calgary, AB, she is inspired by the complexities of all aspects of la Francophonie, especially causes related Francophone women.
It comes as no surprise, then, that Francophone feminism featured prominently throughout her university studies, including in her honours research as part of her Bachelor of French and Francophone Intercultural Studies (BA). Her knowledge on the subject led Radio-Canada ICI Saskatchewan to recruit her numerous times to discuss modern feminism, including topics such as women in politics and female leadership in the Fransaskois community.
Another memorable and enriching experience included being invited to share during a roundtable on the contribution of women to the Francophonie in Saskatchewan hosted by La Cité universitaire francophone.
While a student, Alex was selected to join a Summer University course at the Centre de la francophonie des Amériques at the Campus St-Jean in Edmonton, AB. This 7-day intensive gathers academics, students, professionals, and journalists from the four corners of the continent to celebrate la Francophonie’s diversity while exchanging on important topics affecting each region.

Besides her academic involvement, Alex showcased her passion for French in her extra-curriculars as a founding member of the French Students’ Society, Francophone Director in the University of Regina Students’ Union (URSU) and French contributor to the school newspaper, the Carillon. She also worked as a French tutor and language assistant at La Cité, on top of working a summer job as a translator at the RCMP Depot in Regina.
Naturally, Alex was a familiar face at La Cité and Le Bac, where she completed her after-degree in education (BEAD). She was recognized for her excellence and involved as the recipient numerous awards such as the Jennifer M. Fudge Award ($1,300) and the Laura and Paul Van Loon Award ($1,400). She was also nominated as a "Jeune Leader" (Young Leader), a recognition from the Fransaskois community for inspiring and involved youth.
These days, Alex has the opportunity to share her knowledge and passion for French language and culture daily as a teacher in her own French immersion classroom in Regina where she proudly displays her lifelong commitment to la Francophonie.
