L’édifice Language Institute cherche un nouveau nom

L’Université cherche un nouveau nom pour le Language Institute afin de mieux refléter l’histoire du bâtiment.

Les deux langues officielles du Canada sonnent à l’unisson dans les couloirs et les salles de classes du bâtiment Language Institute. S’il est évident que le français et l’anglais s’y côtoient au quotidien, l’histoire du bâtiment est moins connue.

En 1988, les gouvernements fédéral et provincial s’engagent à promouvoir l’éducation en français en Saskatchewan en contexte minoritaire. Un aspect clé de l’action gouvernementale est l’investissement de 10 millions de dollars afin de construire un nouvel édifice sur le campus de l’Université de Regina. Il s'agit du Language Institute, censé être utilisé prioritairement pour l’enseignement du français. L'édifice ouvre ses portes en 1991.

L’Université de Regina fait aujourd’hui appel aux anciens étudiants, employés, membres du corps professoral, étudiants ainsi qu’au grand public afin de trouver à l’édifice un nouveau nom qui reflèterait plus fidèlement son histoire.

Vos idées doivent être soumises en complétant un court sondage en ligne. Voici quelques paramètres pour encadrer vos propositions de noms:

• Les thèmes devraient décrire l’édifice, sa fonction, son emplacement ou son usage;
• Les noms et thèmes ne peuvent pas s’inspirer du nom d’un individu;
• Les propositions de noms devraient représenter l’université et la communauté;
• Les propositions de noms ne doivent enfreindre aucun droit d’auteur ou marque déposée;
• Veuillez inclure un paragraphe de 70 mots maximum pour expliquer votre choix de nom;
• Tenir compte des unités académiques, programmes et organismes logeant dans l’édifice, à savoir La Cité universitaire francophone, la Faculté d’éducation (Bac en éducation française), le Centre for Continuing Education (ESL) et la Résidence.

Toutes les propositions de noms seront reçues par le comité du changement de nom; le comité fera par la suite une recommandation pour un nouveau nom à la Rectrice de l’université qui prendra la décision finale.

Le comité du changement de nom est présidé par Emmanuel Aïto, directeur de La Cité universitaire francophone et se compose de représentants des différents programmes et organismes logeant dans l’édifice : Abdoulaye Yoh, directeur administration et finance de La Cité universitaire francophone, Céline Magnon, coordinatrice du Programme d’études francophones et interculturelles (PÉFI), Heather Phipps, professeure au Bac en éducation française, Gary Morin, directeur adjoint du Centre for continuing education/ English as a second language (CCE/ESL), Marc Masson, directeur des communications de l‘ACF (Assemblée Communautaire fransaskoise) et Luke Gilmore, étudiant de l’Université de Regina.

Language Institute Building needs a new name

The hallways and classrooms of the Language Institute Building resonate with the sound of Canada’s two official languages. It is obvious that the French and English languages are intimately intertwined here; however, the history of the building is less obvious.

The building’s origins date back to 1988, when the federal and provincial governments committed to supporting minority French education in Saskatchewan. Key to their action plan was the investment of $10 million for the construction of the new Language Institute Building on the University of Regina main campus, to be used primarily for the teaching of French. The building opened its doors in 1991.

Today, the University of Regina is asking alumni, faculty, staff, students and the wider community to help come up with a new name to better reflect this history.

Ideas can be submitted via an online survey, and should follow these guidelines:

• Names should describe the building, function, location or usage.
• Names cannot be of individuals.
• Names should represent the University and community.
• Names should not infringe on existing trademarks.
• Submissions must include a 70-word rationale.
• Names should consider the academic units and other organizations housed in the building, including La Cité universitaire francophone, the Faculty of Education (BAC Program), the Centre for Continuing Education (ESL Program), and the Residence.
• Submissions will be reviewed by the Language Institute Building Renaming Committee which will then make recommendations to the President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Vianne Timmons, who will make the final choice.

The Building Renaming Committee is chaired by Emmanuel Aïto, Director of La Cité universitaire francophone, and has the following representatives from each of the building’s main stakeholders: Abdoulaye Yoh, Administration and Finance Director of La Cité universitaire francophone; Céline Magnon, Coordinator, French and Francophone Intercultural Studies Program; Heather Phipps, Faculty member with the Baccalauréat in Education Program (BAC); Gary Morin, Assistant Director, Centre for Continuing Education / English as a Second Language Program (CCE/ESL); Marc Masson, Communications Director, Assemblée Communautaire fransaskoise (ACF); and, Luke Gilmore, U of R student.

The survey will close on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at midnight.
