French as a Second Language: Oral Communication

General Information

La Cité offers a complete range of programming in French as a second language that meets the needs of learners from beginner to mastery levels. The French communication courses prepare learners to communicate, orally and in writing, in professional and everyday life situations and are designed to develop their language and cultural skills.

These courses are intended for adults (18 yrs and over) who wish to learn French or push their skills to the next level.  Emphasis is on oral comprehension and expression through active practice, while underlining correct grammatical structures. Students are placed according to their level of competency, according to the Common European Framework of Reference* (6 levels, from A1 to C2).

*Common European Framework of Reference:

  • provides a standard for grading an individual's language proficiency according to 6 reference levels (novice to advanced)
  • provides objectives according to 5 competencies (reading, writing, listening, speaking and oral interaction)
  • adopts an action-oriented approach (action or task-based learning)
  • regards language users as social agents who develop general and particular communicative competencies while trying to achieve their everyday goals

If you have never taken a non-credit French course with La Cité, or if it has been more than two years since your last course with us, you will need to do a placement test to determine your level. The test is normally done over the phone and last approximately 20 minutes. If you have never studied French before, you will begin with level A1 - Beginner.
