Scholarships at La Cité

Student excellence rewarded by La Cité at the University of Regina

Regina, Friday September 16, 2016 – Celebrating student achievement was on the menu at La Cité universitaire francophone’s (La Cité) awards ceremony for first-year students enrolled in programs offered in French at the University of Regina.

Dr. Emmanuel Aïto, Acting Director at La Cité, presented new students with the following entrance awards on Thursday, September 15 at an event hosted by La Cité in partnership with CBC/Radio-Canada Saskatchewan, who was launching their upcoming season during this festive evening:

 

Beaubien Award – $750

The Beaubien scholarship is awarded to a Saskatchewan high school graduate with French-Canadian heritage, as outlined in Section 23 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The selection committee based its decision on academic excellence, community involvement and extracurricular activities. Congratulations to Brooke George, from École Bellegarde in Bellegarde, Saskatchewan, who is beginning her studies in the Baccalauréat en éducation française, elementary education.

 

ACUFC Award– $5,000

L’Association des collèges et des universités de la francophonie canadienne (ACUFC) is a consortium of 21 post-secondary institutions outside Québec that promote higher learning in French. Among the 25 scholarships available Canada-wide, La Cité was given the opportunity to award 3 scholarships to students with a French immersion or Core French background that are enrolled in a program offered in French at the University of Regina.

In addition to being in good academic standing, extracurricular and community involvement were also considered. Recipients must also agree to complete a 45-hour community-based project of their choice, in French. This year’s recipients are:

- Jessica Rohatynsky, a graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, that is studying in the Baccalauréat en éducation française, secondary education with a minor in arts education;

- Annabel Asselin from Dr. Martin Leboldus Catholic High School in Regina, Saskatchewan is beginning her studies in the Baccalauréat en éducation française, elementary education;

- Piper Stewart, a recent graduate of Greenall High School in Balgonie, Saskatchewan, who is enrolled in the Certificate in French as a Second Language program.

 

La Cité Graduate Studies Award – $5,000

This scholarship is awarded to students in either the Master of Arts in French or the Maîtrise en éducation française. Preference is given to students whose thesis falls within the fields of French-Canadian or francophone studies and education in French. Although unable to attend the ceremony, the recipients are Marie-Josée LeBel, who teaches in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, and Erika Baldo, who teaches in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

We would like to extend our warm congratulations to the scholarship recipients and we wish them all the best in their upcoming studies.
